Goals

• Since Interior Health lab introduced molecular vaginitis testing in 2022, it's been anongoing source of confusion for emergency physicians and staff. The testing is onlyindicated in certain populations (others still requiring a traditional approach) andrequires a different swab. Lab has attempted to improve ordering through educationalposters as well as improved instructions in Meditech but these haven't been effective indecreasing confusion. From January to May 2026, 10% of vaginal specimens collectedin the ED have been rejected, leading to delays in patient care as well as inefficient useof laboratory and emergency department resources. Dr. Wilmer attended theemergency physician monthly meeting June 10, 2026. Education was provided aroundindications for different types of testing, but it was obvious a lot of confusion still existed. Everyone was very motivated to explore issues contributing to the confusionand to streamline the process, leading to the initiation of this facility engagementproject. The project will involve medical microbiology and emergency departmentphysicians, as well as laboratory staff, and emergency department unit coordinators(who enter orders into meditech) as well as administration.
